Hello,
My name is Beverly Wood and I am a board member of SAVE OUR HERITAGE, SOH, a non-profit made up a volunteers in Chase City, Virginia. I joined the group when I returned to my hometown, after a 36 year career in the film business in Los Angeles, California, with the idea to save this wonderful theater. We were able to appeal to the owner to donate the building to the group and thus began our journey. There are many reasons this building needs to be saved. First, our town is struggling to survive, as many small towns that were once manufacturing hubs. We are trying to redefine ourselves. We are located 1.5 hours from Richmond, VA and Raleigh, NC, and have become not only a tourism destination, but a place to live!
Secondly, the community needs a place to go to see old movies, hear talks, hear music and see each other!
There is no movie theater withing 40 miles. The MECCA THEATRE is most important to me, because it was where my dreams of working in the film business were born. As a young Black child, I sat in the balcony and watched the movies about a life different from what I knew. Thanks to my parents, education was stressed and I received first a BS in Chemistry and then a MS in Analytical Chemistry. I worked at Kodak the first 9 years of my career and then left to pursue the film post world in Los Angeles.
Now, I want to give something back to my town, my home. The young and the old deserve a better town. We recently completed a feasibility survey and know that we need roughly $2M for the project.
We are exploring Tax Credits, and are about to have the roof re-done via a government grant.
